15 May 2017

A VIP industry focused reception was held at The Goldsmiths’ Centre in London on Wednesday 10th May, honouring the current Patrons, Sponsors and Contributors of the annual Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards, and encouraging new companies and individuals to become supporters for the 2018 Awards.

The VIP event included the unveiling of a new behind-the-scenes video showcasing the 2017 awards and judging, and an exclusive  interview with Paul Jones, winner of  2017 The Jacques Cartier Memorial Award, who, to the amazement and bemusement of a the spellbound guests, demonstrated how his outstanding mystery revolving clock functions

Paul  Jones spoke about entering the competition and why it is important for other craftspeople, jewellers and silversmiths – no matter what skill or age - to enter.  “Winning is what any craftsperson who enters a  piece to the Awards is hoping for.  So I would tell any craftsperson thinking about entering to go for it – and to ensure they are working to a standard that is worthy of this competition.  By default, your crafts skills will remain high, which is what we’re known for in this country.  It’s about keeping fine British craftsmanship alive”.

Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council chairman Jos Skeates said: “This inspiring evening celebrated the ongoing success of our awards, and the fantastic support we receive from our Patrons, Sponsors and Contributors to make it all possible. The evening also provided an opportunity to welcome new businesses and individuals keen to endorse the 2018 Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council Awards as the premier event celebrating craft and creative design skills in jewellery, silversmithing and the allied trades”.

Established in 1908, the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council organises its annual Awards – fondly known as the ‘Jewellery Oscars’ – to encourage, stimulate and promote the pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and design among those engaged in silversmithing, goldsmithing, jewellery and the allied trades in the UK.

Taking place each January to March, the GCDC Awards are the only peer-reviewed technical and creative awards in the UK, and are keenly supported by the industry and leading organizations.

The Council’s Founding and Leading Patron is The Goldsmiths’ Company, with world-renowned jeweller Cartier Ltd the Principal Patron. Special Patrons for the Awards currently include The Goldsmiths’ Centre, Baird & Co. Limited, Boodles, International Jewellery London (IJL) and Brown & Newirth.
