Laura Neil, Beaverbrooks
(August Winner)

Laura Neil

“I’d never thought about a career in jewellery – I happened to see a vacancy for a customer sales role with Beaverbrooks at a time in my life when I wanted to try something different.

I studied retail marketing and always had an interest in company-customer relationships. Having worked for Beaverbrooks for two years now, I understand the importance of rapport-building and take pride in giving our customers a memorable and joyous experience.

Within my branch, the team works together to support one another, however we’re also recognised for our individual skills and strengths. I’ve been trusted with the extra responsibility of being our branch’s visual merchandising coordinator.

For our benefit, it’s mandatory to complete the JET Certificate alongside the training we’re given by Beaverbrooks. I’m relishing my new level of confidence – I feel I’ve come into my own as a sales consultant. JET has reinforced my understanding of jewellery production, which has been noticed by my team and branch manager.

My favourite aspect of the course was designing a piece of jewellery using my birthstone – I used my passion for unique and timeless designs and enjoyed incorporating my own interest in astrology and spirituality to create a piece of jewellery that would be affordable, contemporary and a symbol of strength and harmony. The most challenging area of JET was understanding hallmarking and describing each mark – however I’m now enjoying these challenges.

Having completed JET I have more confidence in providing customers with the best information. It gives them peace of mind that what they’ve chosen is right for them. I thoroughly enjoyed the course – it definitely gave me more in-depth knowledge in areas I probably wasn’t as confident in before. I hope to study JET Diploma in the future, as it would help to extend my knowledge even further. I’m thankful for all the help and support my team offered me while studying.”

Enya Quinn, Gear Jewellers
(September Winner)

“After working in a massive clothing store for five years, I needed a change – a new job that would challenge me mentally. I’d never worked in jewellery before but I’d always loved wearing jewellery and had a keen interest in gemstones. Once I saw an opening at Gear Jewellers I thought, “I think I’d be good at that”. Applying for the position last July has been one of the best things I’ve ever done.

The great thing about Gear Jewellers is that we create original content across all platforms, from photography and social media to engraving, and I get to work on all those things, along with selling beautiful jewellery. It’s all hands on deck here!

When applying for the position I was told I’d have the opportunity to further my jewellery education through the JET course and this really appealed to me. I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge from it and it’s given me a huge confidence boost when selling to customers.

I really enjoyed the gemstone assignment as I find gems fascinating. There’s so much to learn and every gem has a unique story. As part of the assignment you’re asked to design a piece of jewellery using your birthstone and that let my creativity come into play. I found the project on the 4Cs to be the most challenging – there’s so much information there that I had to get into one project, but it was ultimately the most rewarding assignment.

Even though each assignment became a little more difficult, I was also growing with confidence and learning so much. My tutor, Mark, was brilliant – giving me feedback after every assignment, making note of the parts I did well on and giving me suggestions on others. Knowing where I excelled and the parts that needed tweaking really shaped my growth in the right direction.

I’ve already begun JET Diploma, which I’m really excited about. It will be a challenge but it’s a challenge I’m ready for. Who knows what doors this will open for me, but I hope to stay in the jewellery business and with Gear Jewellers for a long time coming. It’s too much fun!”
