Gem Empathy Award open to IJL visitors for the first time

IJL and Gem-A launch the Gem Empathy competition 2019 and ask for jewellery designs for a unique and precious coral jewel.

Returning for IJL 2019 is the long-standing Gem Empathy Award, a joint collaboration of IJL and Gem-A; the competition focuses on the sustainable use of a precious gemstone to create a beautiful, bespoke design and is open to all exhibitors, and for the first time, visitors to the show. 

This year, the star of the competition is a sustainably sourced 12.0 carat coral cabochon, provided by coral supplier, Enzo Liverino 1894; the stone itself was fashioned in Torre del Greco from a trunk harvested in Japan. Entrants are tasked with designing a piece of jewellery, either handrawn or a CAD render, with the design showcasing the stone in a unique and innovative way; the winner will receive the cabochon, an article in Gems&Jewellery and a voucher towards the construction of their design.

Coral was chosen as this year's competition focus in keeping with Pantone's colour trend of the year, but it also a great opportunity to address issues of sustainabilty, climate change, trawling and overfishing, which leads to vast levels of reef coral bleaching and damage to sea life, making it of vital importance to source the gemstone from an ecosystem which is not endangered.

Entries will be judged by a panel, which includes the Editor of Retail Jeweller, Ruth Faulkner, and the winner to be presented on the Gem-A booth at IJL on 1st September 2019.

Send your design (hand drawn or CAD image) along with an accompanying paragraph describing the materials used and the inspiration behind the piece to events@gem-a.com before 12 August 2019.
