Obituary of Mary Garland

01 Feb 2019

The National Association of Jewellers is very sad to announce the passing of Mary Garland, who was one of its longest-standing JET course tutors. She began working for the education department of the Association (the NAG as it was then) around 30 years ago and has been described by colleagues as very kind, versatile, straight talking, adventurous and glamorous.

“Mary was a dedicated tutor who I saw at annual tutors meetings and every year at the Presentation of Awards,” says fellow tutor Michelle McCormick. “She loved celebrating our students’ success. She has had a long and interesting career in the jewellery industry –for instance she bought jewellery for art collector and philanthropist Anne Hull Grundy, utilising her extensive jewellery and gemmological knowledge. Mary is held in high regard by her all fellow NAJ tutors and will be sadly missed.”

She was diagnosed with motor neurone disease last year. Our thoughts are with Mary’s husband Alistair, her family and friends.
