NAJ Returns to Worldskills UK to Find the Next Generation of Jewellers

19 Nov 2019

On the 21st-23rd November 2019, the NAJ will return to WorldSkills UK, the UK’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event held at the NEC, Birmingham, where young people between the ages of 14-21 attended in great numbers seeking inspiration and advice on their future careers.

This year, the NAJ are supported by industry companies, Weston Beamor, Hockley Mint, Cooksongold, CW Sellors, GF Williams, Gem-A, the British Horological Institute and the Birmingham School of Jewellery, each bringing a wealth of knowledge covering the whole of the jewellery industry.

Carrying on tradition, students visiting the stand will be invited to take part in the NAJ Jewellery Design Competition, in which they select a gemstone to create a design around, with the winning entry being brought to life by CW Sellors. Last year’s winner was Megan Hailes, who designed a stunning silver pendant ‘the odd one out’, showing great potential as a future jewellery designer!

“This experience has taught me to want to try something else outside of food. I guess it’s like a lot of young people, we just need people to give us the opportunity. I have to say thank you to C.W. Sellors for making my design item come to life, it’s exactly as I imagined it.” Said Megan.

Alongside the design competition, there will be live practical demonstrations taking place on stand, including wax carving, watchmaking and stone mounting, giving the students the opportunity to get involved with the many crafts of the jewellery industry.

With a sold-out first day of the show, WorldSkills is the ideal event to showcase our industry and inspire the jewellers of tomorrow to take up the skills of the trade.

Industry representatives can follow NAJ’s attendance at the show across Twitter and Instagram as well as a newly launched Snapchat account @UK_NAJ which enables attendees to take photos with a one-off ‘World Skills jewellery filter’.
