The impact of Brexit on UK Hallmarking

31 May 2018

NAJ attended a recent meeting with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for Exiting the European Union (DEXEU) to discuss the impact of Brexit on UK Hallmarking, alongside colleagues from the four Assay Offices and British Hallmarking Council.

Simon Forrester, who attended on behalf of NAJ said

I was pleased to see that by the end of the meeting UK government had a stronger understanding of the potential impacts of Brexit on hallmarking, and the ingredients for a plan. We need to provide some further research on what British industry looks like in terms of employment levels, penetration of overseas product and its sources, influence of internet trading, and control of imports, before any decisions are made. Current hallmarking legislation is less than perfect, and there are a lot of unknowns in the event of a hard Brexit, but industry has started to pull together to provide UK PLC with a way forward. We need to avoid any significant negative effect while maximising the potential to revitalise our industry
