In its fifth year at the festive, fun-filled and increasingly popular Benevolent Society ball, the NAJ Awards attracted guests from all across the UK and internationally including Italy, Germany, Ireland and France, as companies, individuals and teams were recognised for their professionalism, honesty and integrity. 

The glittering ceremony was hosted by NAJ Chief Executive, Simon Forrester and NAJ Chair, Harriet Kelsall who presented each winner with their awards, and paid tribute to the talent in the jewellery industry.

This year there were 11 awards with three new categories, Innovation of the Year, Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year and Physical Shop Front of the Year.

Winner: Tracey Jones, Purely Diamonds

Tracey has worked in the jewellery industry for over 30 years leading by example in all that she does. Following a career in Italy that saw her presenting a weekly television show about all things diamond and jewellery, she joined Purely Diamonds to single-handedly open and run their Manchester showroom. 

As a highly dynamic individual she brings her vast experience and excellent communications skills to the company with professionalism every day. As a gemmologist her knowledge exceeds all expectations and she surpasses all sales targets for the Manchester showroom. 

A career investment clearly demonstrated through the satisfaction her customers enjoy. Seen as ‘invaluable’ to the team, her knowledge and emotional intelligence is a sure-fire winner.

Craig Cohen, Ntinga- Craig joined Ntinga in 2012, and has since proven himself as being a fantastic sales person around the UK and Europe and an extremely personable member of the business.

Emma Williamson, Lucy Quartermaine Jewellery- Emma was promoted to UK Sales Manager in 2019. Immediately after beginning her role, the Lucy Quartermaine brand saw increases in retail partners and sales.

Winner: Julien Riad Sahyoun 

Award-winning fine jewellery designer Julien Riad Sahyoun is a creative and emotive storyteller, and an artist of hidden depths. Whether communicating Julien’s passion to foster unity amongst people or reviving lost languages through secret Babylonian scripts, his are jewels that have meaning and call for a second look. 

Matching his artistic abilities with a burgeoning interest in jewellery design and gemmology, Julien studied his craft at the Gemological Institute of AmericaAfter honing his skills and deepening his knowledge, Julien made the decision to launch his own brand, JRS, in 2016. Today, Julien finds himself in London, where he has a showroom in the affluent South Kensington neighbourhood.

Arabel Lebrusan- Lebrusan Studio is a leading ethical jewellery brand selling a range of luxury jewels designed by award-winning Arabel Lebrusan, specialising in engagement rings, wedding rings and unique bespoke commissions.

Charlotte Cornelius- Creatively, immersed in her coastal environment, Charlotte is often experimenting with texture, contrast and freedom of form, which many of her Ready to Wear collections encapsulate.

Erica Sharpe- Erica’s jewellery is a beautiful, personal, artistic and spiritual celebration of her craft and the ethically sourced materials used. It aims to bring joy to all who are part of the creative journey; from miner to end wearer.

Winner: Alexander Wood

Alexander Wood is a 24-year-old diamond mounter reaching the end of his Goldsmiths’ Company apprenticeship. Working with Nathaniel Groves at his workshop just outside of Tumbridge Wells, Kent, Alexander regularly demonstrates ‘ingenuity and exquisite craftsmanship’ according to his master. This year Alexander has worked on 25 pieces, with the latest item heading towards the Goldsmiths Craft and Design Council awards. Alexander is hopeful of more honours after winning gold, silver and bronze recognition at previous GCDC awards, in between representing the UK at the World Skills finals in Abu Dhabi  

Alexander is an exemplary apprentice mounter, demonstrating ingenuity and exquisite craftsmanship while working on 25 pieces during the year, winning GC&DC awards and completing his masterpiece to present to the Goldsmiths’ Company.

Alexander Wood, Nathaniel Groves Jewellery- Alexander Wood is a 24-year-old diamond mounter reaching the end of his Goldsmiths’ Company apprenticeship with Nathaniel Groves at his workshop just outside of Tumbridge Wells, Kent.

Anthony Dellow, House of Hatton- Tony Dellow is a Jeweller that has spent all his working life in Hatton Garden, some 43 years; from an apprenticeship to becoming self-employed. Owning a workshop to work in a way that suited jewellery making was the start.

Richard Soden, Hockley Mint- Through the combined efforts of multiple generations, Hockley Mint has grown into one of the largest independent jewellery manufacturers in Europe, offering everything from hand-carved waxes and diamond-setting to rapid prototyping, CAD/CAM design, 3D printing and complete ready-to-wear collections.

Peter Byrne, The Jewellery Design Workshop- At 15, Peter Byrne began his 30 years within the fabulous jewellery industry. In his professional career he has worked and gained a wealth of experience in bridal manufacturing and design.

Winner: MyriamSOS

Award-winning jewellery designer Myriam Soseilos of MyriamSOS Fine Jewellery has had some interesting commissions. The “Aqua Wave” Ring: The ring was commissioned by the Institute of Osmium to MyriamSOS because of their innovative approach to design and for being renowned for pushing the boundaries of experimentation to create innovative, unexpected and differentiated JewelleryWith plans to expand into new territories, such as Asia, MyriamSOS will continue to be at the forefront of innovative jewellery design. 

The Aqua Wave ring designed MyriamSOS, in collaboration with the Osmium Institute, is one of very few jewellery pieces globally containing osmium.

Akansha Sethi- AS by Akansha Sethi launched in 2017 and exhibited at the Designer Showrooms, London Fashion Week first in February 2018. Each collection has demonstrated her love for experimenting with different materials, exploring artisanal techniques and new mediums.

De Beers Industry Services- De Beers Group Industry Services’ mission is to grow and strengthen confidence across the diamond industry. As such, it provides diamond grading; proprietary synthetic diamond detection equipment; melee, parcel and set diamond verification services; and a range of expert educational courses.

MyriamSOS- MyriamSOS are proud of their innovative approach to design and for being renowned for pushing the boundaries of experimentation to create innovative, unexpected and differentiated Jewellery. A prime example being the “Aqua Wave” Ring commissioned by the Institute of Osmium.

Hill & Hill The Jewellers- Hill & Hill the Jewellers is a brand-new boutique in the centre of Altrincham. The owners Alex Hill and Jo Henderson have transformed the former opticians into a totally unique store with their unique “Relaxed Luxury” concept.

Lister Horsfall- Lister Horsfall have developed a brand identity for their stores over the last few years which is in keeping with their history as a county jeweller but with a contemporary twist.

Maunder Watch Co- Maunder Watches has created a very relaxed and (motor sport) friendly atmosphere where clients can come to talk about watches and look at our collection. We have a mixture of modern and vintage time pieces that have been sourced from all over. Finding the next rare watch is what keeps the heart of the business pumping.
